David Teece Receives CK Prahalad Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award
BRG is pleased to announce that Chairman and Principal Executive Officer Dr. David J. Teece has received the Strategic Management Society’s (SMS) CK Prahalad Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award in recognition of excellence in the application of theory and research in practice. That dual focus and Teece’s leadership have made him one of the foremost thinkers in research and application of theory related to business and academia. Teece will accept the award on September 24 at the SMS Annual Conference in Paris.
“As a renowned academic, a prolific author, an active consultant, serial entrepreneur, angel investor and CEO mentor, Teece brings honor and new stature to the CK Prahalad Award with his continued devotion to assisting and improving the work of practitioners, academics and policy makers,” according to the SMS. Prahalad, the award’s namesake, is revered as a business thought leader who bridged theory and practice.
Teece is the Thomas W. Tusher Professor and director of the Tusher Center for the Management of Intellectual Capital at the University of California, Berkeley. He has a PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and has held positions at Stanford University and Oxford University. He has testified before Congress on regulatory and competition policy, has authored of over 200 books and articles and edits Industrial & Corporate Change (Oxford University Press).
According to Science Watch, Teece is the lead author on the most cited article in economics and business worldwide (1995–2005). He is an SMS Fellow, has eight honorary doctorates and is an active angel investor in technology startups. In 2019, he will be the second Adam Smith Scholar at Smith’s recently restored house in Edinburgh. The first resident scholar was Smith himself.

Teece’s other significant entrepreneurial ventures include Mt. Beautiful Vineyards and Farms in the Cheviot Hills of North Canterbury, on New Zealand’s South Island; Vomo Island Resort in the Fiji Islands; and student housing initiatives in the Berkeley, California, community.
“Teece continues to publish, consult and grow businesses,” said the SMS. “He is working on a new theory of the firm which he thinks is necessary to foster better decisions not only by firms themselves but by policymakers in Washington ... His research agenda is animated by a grand hope to see the field of economics craft policies grounded in an understanding of organizational capabilities.”
